The Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month is an event of PIK2AR, Pacific Island Knowledge 2 Action Resources, a founding organization of Pacific Island Heritage Month, which began in 2013 as declared by Utahs Governor Herbert on behalf of the 35000 Pacific Islanders that live in the state of Utah Utahs Pacific Island Heritage Month is multi venues with varied events that orginially began as a platform for Pacific Island community organizations to showcase their heritage and culture educating across communities of the similarities and differences between our cultures, instilling positive pride and self-identity for each, importantly for our youth, and to debunk the stereo types of Pacific Islanders to the broader Utah Community Utah is home to the largest Tongan and 4th largest Samoan communities in the United States 1 in every 4 US Tongans live in Utah This celebration attracts hundreds of Pacific Islanders and allies from all communities to the events The 2014 Heritage Month was produced by volunteers and attracted an estimated 4000 people throughout Utah, from coast to coast and all over the world, boosting patronage to restaurants, clubs, hotels, cultural venues, galleries and retail outlets During the month attendees enjoyed vendor & food booths from Pacific Island Entrepreneurs at events such as the Friendly Island Festival & Rugby Games, Free Community Film Screening, Mana 5K and Art Exhibit sponsored by Pacific Island Community Based organizations who all contribute to the months success Our 2015 Utah Pacific Island Heritage committee has been working hard preparing for another great August with a few exciting changes! Our 2015 events have doubled and expanded with new partnerships like UVU and the SLC Film Center with an estimated attendance increase from 4000 to 8000 plus! This year we are also so proud to celebrate Jacob Fitisemanus appointment to President Obamas Whitehouse Asian American Pacific Island Commission at a community dance and potluck Last years Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month was a success and we couldnt have done it without the support of our generous sponsors! This years Utah Pacific Island Heritage Month promises to build on that success With your support, we continue providing experiences, opportunities, and education for all communities to engage in cross culture interaction, preserve the Pacific Island culture, celebrate and honor the sacrifices & contributions of the Pacific Island pioneers and present day in our families, churches, and communities that are all part of Utahs proud history and diversity
